so speaking of harlem crit… here’s a little story you might enjoy. in the 80’s there was a tough racer from australia named danny clark. he was well known track start and an accomplished crit monster. this one time brian was racing in the harlem crit when danny clark showed up and before long he lapped the field solo. now, before you say something about how short that circuit is just wait a second… the story isn’t over yet. before the finish danny clark lapped the entire field again. that’s right. one man lapped the entire field twice in one race. i mean, seriously… what do you say about something like that?
when brian told me that story i got curious about danny clark’s exploits in the past. the really disturbing part about this story is that, turns out, he actually has a history of making these impossible stories possible.

and now… we rejoin the recap already in progress after a looong commercial break.
a beautiful day and a huge turn out. more importantly, some old dear faces. alex turned up from the city to prove that he does indeed *lose* weight when he doesn’t ride. bob “the body”. now there’s a face i haven’t seen in a long while. he graced us with his presence today in his usual windblocker winter tights and tripple layered attire on this fine 60+ degree sunny day. and finally, manny (aka juan, aka manuel). it’s so fuckin’ great to see him on his bike again after THAT accident.
i had a feeling it will be a fast ride and i wasn’t disappointed. things got underway pretty much right away. we were already hauling ass on rt.22. i had the bad case of jello legs again. i just tried to sit near the front and see if i can follow a good move.
i ended up setting up a move i couldn’t follow. i set up rob on the picket fence climb but got gapped as soon as he came around me on the top. few riders chased him down and the first move of the day was now underway. there were about 7-8 riders who came together on the airport rd. with about 20 second gap. eugene and rob were up there motoring and we all knew that was going to be the move of the day.
we actually paced really hard all day. the worker bees were still few and far in between to organize the 30+ pack but we never really turned off the chase. we were encouraged with being able to keep the attackers in our sight dangling off the front like a good piece of juicy, organically grown carrot. we even managed to come very close to closing down the gap a few times but never could quite nail down the last 10 second gap.
it was a good ride though. it was pretty nervous in the beginning but the pace was fast enough to keep the riders stretched out over the dangerous parts of the ride.
i was told later that we averaged 22+ from north white plains and 24+ from the split.
